Fifth grade update 2/23

FIFTH GRADE NEWS AND COMMUNICATION
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 23-29, 2015

A BIG thanks to those of you who have sent in your classroom donation for the auction!  It’s going to be “Cool For School!”  There’s already a cool desk and a funky lamp. Someone is going to get a neat study spot!

Passport this Thursday
UPCOMING DATES: Auction March 21
Olympia Junior Programs March 4 (NEXT WEEK!)  & 17 at 12:30 pm.  Chaperones and ushers needed for each performance.  Cost is $8 for both plays, or you may send $4 twice.

READ-IN THIS MONDAY!  Pajamas, funny books, pillows, bean bags, special guests, maybe a movie from one of our books...come prepared to relish the role of reading in our lives!

BIBLE:   2 Corinthians 6:16New International Version (NIV)

16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will live with them
   and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”

READING:   From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Reading logs are due next Monday, signed  and totaled.

*****There are several titles missing from our classroom library.  Please help your student check their room for books marked STEELE or CCS.  Some are being waited upon by the next reader. *********

LANGUAGE ARTS:  We’ll be working with similes and expanding vocabulary through our latest novel.  Look for Shackleton papers to come home this weekend (I will email you their ungraded paper). They did a great job with their 5 paragraph essays. A few just need to finish typing theirs up.

SPELLING: Lesson 23 Due Friday, test Friday

SOCIAL STUDIES: The first few decades of our country were marked by growing pains as we tried to determine what kind of country we were going to be!  This is a neat section of history!

State notebooks- no home assignment!   Trivia cards!  We are making these in class this week.

STATES AND CAPITALS:
REVIEW 1-27, round 2.  Almost all students passed on the first try, we will have a second attempt this Friday.  The higher of the two grades will be taken.  If your child got 100% correct, they do not need to retake the test this week.
Quiz on Friday.  I locate them by number on a map and the students spell the state and capital correctly by the number.

LIBRARY:  Bring books this week

SCIENCE:   Learning the main bones of the human body by name, the structure and other jobs of our bones, and muscles.
