News from Fifth Grade

Parent News for Fifth Grade
October 26-30, 2015

Hello! We had a great trip to Ft. Vancouver last Thursday.  The weather was fantastic and the kids were excellent.  We’ll be revisiting our trip and working through the Junior Ranger program. We’ll send the packets in and hopefully get a badge back!  It is a fun place to experience history.  Kids under 16 are always free, and adults cost just $5.  There is also an air museum and airfield that dates back to World War I just adjacent. It’s worth a weekend or break visit.  Many thanks to David Putnam for chaperoning and driving us there safely and back, and to Wendy Yancey for chaperoning as well. A van full of fifth graders, no matter how well behaved, is a big way to spend 4 hours!

We have had some class changes.  Our friend Kate is moving to a different part of the city and will be joining her sister in a school system there.   Today our new friend Anneke Collins arrived.  While it’s hard to say goodbye and hello so quickly, we know God has good things for both girls and we are praying for both families during these transitions.

Reading
Reading calendars are due this Friday, October 30.  Please tally and sign.   I am grading my way through the Shiloh test and final reading responses/vocab.  Those will come home this Friday. We will start Poppy this week. Along with rich vocabulary, we also write reports on animals and dig into (sanitized, sterilized) owl pellets.

Spelling

Lesson 7 is due Friday.

Language Arts

IXL is good practice.  Your student may work below fifth grade level on any skill that strikes their fancy while at home, but we are working together on the fifth grade skills at school.

We are finishing our Scar Stories and will be illustrating those this week.  Next week we will complete our first book report, “TREE”- mendous book reports.  This assignment will not come home, but there will be a couple later on that need some poster help at home.

Bible

Romans 12:2  Good verse this week (and last!) about not being conformed but being transformed.  We’re also helping out in chapel this week by presenting about Operation Christmas Child.  We’ll do a no-no box, a yes-yes box, and what comes out of the box skit.  Collection week is in just a couple of weeks.

Social Studies

Junior Ranger and Maps-- we’ll start states and capitals next week along with our history section.

Science

We engineered drop copters and next we explore spinning disks as a means to slow descent.
Ultimately we’ll engineer a drop device that can hold some small plastic animals and meet some drop criteria for time and payload.  One interesting thing we learned today is that engineers have no room for pride, only honesty.  If your design doesn’t work, you have to admit it and redesign.

DATES:

Boys basketball and Cheerleading begin on November 2

Helping students in class on project days and with re-organization of binders/backpacks
Lab prep for engineering units (organizing, gathering, improvising at times)
Lab prep for middle school science (gathering, prepping slides and microscopes or physical science tools, sometimes sorting candy for modeling molecules)

Homework:  Read a minimum of fifteen minutes nightly at home. Please assist your student in making sure this is done.

Spelling Lesson 6 Review came home. Students do not write their words on a review week. The test will have 25 of the 100 words we've studied since school started.

We also are working on IXL- this week we're working on subjects and predicates. Students are doing well with it. We also learned to identify similes from our book Shiloh.

SCIENCE

We'll start memorizing states and capitals in November and we start US History this week.

BIBLE VERSE:  Colossians 3:8 Test Wednesday.  Please study!

CHAPEL is every Wednesday.  Please encourage your fifth grade student to wear chapel clothes and bring their worship voices! SCIENCE
Engineering unit is resuming tomorrow, today we looked at photos from Museum of the Rockies, located at Montana State University in Bozeman. They have one of the most important collection of dinosaur fossils, including the biggest triceratops, several T-Rex, and amazing juvenile dinos. If you ever are in the area, stop in and see this collection.

US HISTORY and SOCIAL STUDIES
We're working on labeling and coloring maps of the US with state names and capitals. We'll also label major rivers and geographic areas.

Parent news 10/5

NEWS FROM FIFTH GRADE                      WEEK OF OCT. 5-9
Happy fall, ya’ll!  The Glow Run was a blast and thanks to all of you who came out to support the school and get your glow on!   Next week is Spirit Week and we go ALL out.  I know when I was new to Cornerstone, I was stunned by the goofy fun that is Spirit Week.  Best costume every day gets a prize and best overall gets a bigger prize.  We have yelling contests, play crazy games, and generally just have a great time!

I will be gone this Friday, October 9, to Montana State University to visit my son for Parent Weekend (and also taking my high school daughter to visit a university in order to encourage her in her AP classes!)  Keith Quentin will be my sub.  Keith is a retired middle school science teacher and he is great. He taught for a couple of hours today while I attended a family appointment.

READING

Students are reading a novel of their own choosing and our class novel study book, Shiloh.  We will finish the class novel next week and have a test over the book on Thursday.  The test will be open book.

Homework:  Read a minimum of fifteen minutes nightly at home for October. Please assist your student in making sure this is done.

Classtime:  Shiloh is halfway done. Our pet pen project is due tomorrow, look for photos on the school FB page!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Spelling: Lesson 5 came home today. Students should complete the packet and write the words for practice on a separate sheet of paper, stapled to the packet.  TEST is Friday morning and lesson is due upon arrival in class. The test is moving to cursive although students still may use print alongside on the test.  It may help to practice the packet in cursive as well.

Language Arts is finishing up with our 25 things project.  Look for those on binder covers this week. We’re learning to think about language as descriptive in every way as much as a picture.

SCIENCE

We learned today about an engineered technology that completely changed science.  Microscopes really got a leg up when cloth merchant used existing technology of magnifying tubes that gave low magnification to examine his cloth.  He grew interested in what he could see, improved the existing scopes, handmade the first true microscopes (500+ handground lenses!)  and became a pioneer in microorganism study.  We talked about the parts of the microscope because we’ll have a chance to look at some of those same species of microorganisms tomorrow as we piggyback with middle school’s study. The perks of teaching multi-grades are many!

We also got to look at the (completely safe) bacteria colonies that the middle schoolers cultivated last week.  The nutrient dishes we used to cultivate don’t allow any harmful bacteria to grow, just benign colonies but it shows kids how fast bacteria multiply and why they should wash their hands and everyday surfaces! Most bacteria are too small to see well with student scopes, but we observed the colonies appear and grow fast in the right conditions.

US HISTORY and SOCIAL STUDIES

We’re finishing up map skills.  I gave students a large map of the US and encouraged them to name as many states and capitals as they could.  Some were quite well-versed, and all gave a good effort.  It helps us know where to start, too.  We’ll fix them Thursday.

BIBLE

John 14:23
This week, we’ll discuss truth and the limits of our human senses to comprehend it, and the good news that God is truth and completely trustworthy.  His word is amazing in our lives. We’ll also review the books, divisions and genres of the Bible.

GENERAL INFORMATION

PE is Monday, Tuesday and Friday-- please help your fifth grade student remember athletic shoes and good clothes for running and jumping.

MUSIC is Wednesday and Thursday.

CHAPEL is every Wednesday.  Please encourage your fifth grade student to wear chapel clothes and bring their worship voices!
