Washington State Map

Washington State Map Due 1/30/2014
(2/6/2014 for third grade)

1.  Use the map provided by Mrs. Steele.  She has extras in case you need them.
Spell things correctly. Do not rush this project. Have fun!

2.  All words should be written neatly left to right, not up and down or winding about. Either remember to capitalize all names as proper nouns or use all capital letters to label. Write "small" and neatly.

2.  Lightly trace the outlines of the five different geographical regions of Washington. Shade them neatly in 5 different colors, one for each region. Write each region’s name neatly in its center or close to it.

3.  Locate with a dot and label neatly the following cities: Aberdeen, Port Angeles, Spokane, Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima. Pay attention to the shape of land near each city to locate it properly.

4.  Locate with a star and label the state capital, Olympia.

5.   Draw and color blue the following bodies of water: Snake River, Columbia River, Strait of Juan De Fuca, Puget Sound, Pacific Ocean.

6.  Indicate the Olympic and Cascade Mountains with a line or groups of triangular points.  Be neat and write "small". Label them.

7. Locate and label the following volcanoes: Adams, St. Helens, Rainier, Baker, Glacier.  Use a slightly larger triangular point shape to show where these are.

8. Use ultra fine point Sharpie and go over all labels, dots, and the star.  Do not use on boundaries, bodies of water,  or mountains.

9.  You are finished with this component!  Great job!

State Flower Drawing

STATE FLOWER EXPECTATIONS 4/5 only Washington State Flower DUE 1/23/2014

**I find it easier to work from a drawing off the computer or a print out.

1. Use only the paper provided.  Make a practice drawing first on scratch paper.
2. Using pencil, lightly draw your image of the state flower onto the 5 inch white square. Center it and fill most of the square. No tiny flowers. NO TRACING-neat, not perfect!
3. Color using map pencil. Leave the background white. Outline all lines in ultra fine point sharpie.
4. Mount it on the gray square using glue stick.  Center it carefully.
5.  Write the state flower’s name continuously around the edge of the white paper on the gray square.  Use small neat lettering.  Spell correctly.  Go in the same direction all the way around, even if it’s upside down on the bottom STATEand sideways on the sides. You may do this lightly in pencil first, but make sure the final result is ultra fine point sharpie for your lettering.
6.  Mount the two layer picture onto the center of the large special paper.  Title it “Washington State Flower”   on the top above the picture.
7. Below the picture, type or neatly write the name of the flower.
8. Put your name on the back in pencil along with the date.

9. DONE!  I can’t wait to see your lovely work!

Blake's book report

I recently read the book The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan. The plot of the story can be summarized like this: Kronos is the sky god, but he has to hold up the sky or it would crush him. He wanted to be freed from holding the sky. So, he got the hunting goddess to hold it up for him.

My favorite part was when Mr. D fought Dr. Thorn (a monster). I liked the story when Mr. D said,”Now get going, Percy Jackson!” when he usually says Peter Johnson. It showed he might care a little about Percy.  I felt sad when Bianca died from taking a enchanted god figurine of Hades. It was forbidden treasure and the guardian of the gods’ junkyard was protecting their things.  The story’s plot reminded me of The Red Pyramid because they both have ancient creatures that try to take over the world.

Maggie's Book Review

 The Penderwicks on Garden Street

I read The Penderwicks on Garden Street by Jeanne Birdsall.  Skye, one of the four Penderwick sisters, is trying to find out who their widowed father is going out on blind dates with. But he would not tell them so Skye and her other sisters asked question till their father told them that he was not going out with a real person. Instead he was reading a book somewhere quiet.
My favorite part of the book is when Skye fainted because she was afraid.  I also liked it when Jane shouted’’Yoo hoo! Daddy’s car won’t start.”   I was surprised when Mr. Penderwick admitted that he wasn’t going out. Mr. Penderwick reminds me of my dad because he is so kind.
