FIFTH GRADE NEWS AND COMMUNICATION
WEEK OF JANUARY 19-23,  2015

School Dates:  State of the School Address from the Board this Thursday at 5:30 in the Black Hills Center.   Please come to hear the beautiful story of what God has done in the past with our sweet school and what the future plans are.
Parent Forum is the following Thursday at 7:00 pm

Please keep praying for the Clements family and those students affected by Jameson’s death.  Only love so amazing as that of Christ can get us through this tough loss.

BIBLE:  Romans 3:25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood.  He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-
READING:  Trial by Ice, the story of Ernest Shackleton and the Endurance.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Helping verbs, irregular verbs, and typing up  Franklin papers DUE 1/22. Students finished them in class last week and took their writing journals home.  If your child has a google gmail account, they began typing it on their google drive.  We are working towards setting up a google drive account for each student in order to make it easier to access work.

SPELLING: Lesson 18 due Friday along with the test.  Review week- no words to write!

SOCIAL STUDIES: The origins of the American Revolution, as well as a brief history of civil rights in relation to MLK Day.  Fifth grade is an important age as students begin to look at history through the eyes of human experience and God’s leading.  Your students are doing great.

State Bird due this week on Thursday.

STATES AND CAPITALS:  Bismarck, North Dakota; Pierre, South Dakota; Lincoln,Nebraska; Topeka, Kansas; Des Moines, Iowa.  Quiz on Friday.  I locate them by number and the students spell the state and capital correctly by the number.

LIBRARY: Next week-- Nora has bronchitis and we will have a guest instructor tomorrow.

SCIENCE:  Oh, my!  The cells were fun and sticky.  We will eat them as soon as they set up in the refrigerator and I snap a few photos.  Many, many thanks for the candy donations.  We ate as much as we used, I think.  Yum!  Next up body systems.

MUSIC ALERT:  Students will begin a recorder (think plastic flute-type instrument) unit in February.  Please send $5 to the office to cover a new recorder for your student which they may keep.  If you have questions, please contact Miss Mazucca.  Thanks for those of you who have sent your $ in.

PE : T, TH, F
MUSIC: M, W
TRIP TO CERAMIC STUDIO January 23 to create  auction art piece!

There’s a SUPRISE on the way!  Please be on the alert for a phone call from Leslie Johnson regarding a sneaky and fun fifth grade learning experience.

AUCTION UPDATE:  Less than two months away! If you’d like to procure a particular item, please give us a buzz.  We can also just get the things and divide the cost.  Please communicate your preference.  Two parents are procuring, two would like to contribute.  9 to go! We’re veering towards a clean nautical theme that would work for either a sophisticated girly or cool young man.

Here’s the list: (thinking Ikea style)
  • Simple desk  or table
  • Simple cool rolling chair
  • Desk lamp
  • Desk top organizers
  • Bulletin board/white board combo

Wishes: a geometric rug, an iHome, gift card to Target  to provide specific boy/girl  touches, rolling cart with drawers
