Parent news 10/5

NEWS FROM FIFTH GRADE                      WEEK OF OCT. 5-9
Happy fall, ya’ll!  The Glow Run was a blast and thanks to all of you who came out to support the school and get your glow on!   Next week is Spirit Week and we go ALL out.  I know when I was new to Cornerstone, I was stunned by the goofy fun that is Spirit Week.  Best costume every day gets a prize and best overall gets a bigger prize.  We have yelling contests, play crazy games, and generally just have a great time!

I will be gone this Friday, October 9, to Montana State University to visit my son for Parent Weekend (and also taking my high school daughter to visit a university in order to encourage her in her AP classes!)  Keith Quentin will be my sub.  Keith is a retired middle school science teacher and he is great. He taught for a couple of hours today while I attended a family appointment.

READING

Students are reading a novel of their own choosing and our class novel study book, Shiloh.  We will finish the class novel next week and have a test over the book on Thursday.  The test will be open book.

Homework:  Read a minimum of fifteen minutes nightly at home for October. Please assist your student in making sure this is done.

Classtime:  Shiloh is halfway done. Our pet pen project is due tomorrow, look for photos on the school FB page!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Spelling: Lesson 5 came home today. Students should complete the packet and write the words for practice on a separate sheet of paper, stapled to the packet.  TEST is Friday morning and lesson is due upon arrival in class. The test is moving to cursive although students still may use print alongside on the test.  It may help to practice the packet in cursive as well.

Language Arts is finishing up with our 25 things project.  Look for those on binder covers this week. We’re learning to think about language as descriptive in every way as much as a picture.

SCIENCE

We learned today about an engineered technology that completely changed science.  Microscopes really got a leg up when cloth merchant used existing technology of magnifying tubes that gave low magnification to examine his cloth.  He grew interested in what he could see, improved the existing scopes, handmade the first true microscopes (500+ handground lenses!)  and became a pioneer in microorganism study.  We talked about the parts of the microscope because we’ll have a chance to look at some of those same species of microorganisms tomorrow as we piggyback with middle school’s study. The perks of teaching multi-grades are many!

We also got to look at the (completely safe) bacteria colonies that the middle schoolers cultivated last week.  The nutrient dishes we used to cultivate don’t allow any harmful bacteria to grow, just benign colonies but it shows kids how fast bacteria multiply and why they should wash their hands and everyday surfaces! Most bacteria are too small to see well with student scopes, but we observed the colonies appear and grow fast in the right conditions.

US HISTORY and SOCIAL STUDIES

We’re finishing up map skills.  I gave students a large map of the US and encouraged them to name as many states and capitals as they could.  Some were quite well-versed, and all gave a good effort.  It helps us know where to start, too.  We’ll fix them Thursday.

BIBLE

John 14:23
This week, we’ll discuss truth and the limits of our human senses to comprehend it, and the good news that God is truth and completely trustworthy.  His word is amazing in our lives. We’ll also review the books, divisions and genres of the Bible.
